Costa Chica Tour

JOIN US FOR THE COSTA CHICA EXPERIENCE!

The Costa Chica (Short Coast in Spanish) is one of the most magical, beautiful, culturally intact parts of Mexico. It's a beach destination that has not suffered from overdevelopment and mass tourism. There are no chains type stores, and most businesses are locally owned. This stunning coastline will take your breath away with its endless mangroves brimming with songbirds, vibrant green iguanas and spectacular mountain views as far as the eye can see.

Costa Chica has developed slowly and organically over decades. Its economy, long based on subsistence farming and fishing, now includes a modest tourism industry. The area is relatively hard to get to (there are no direct international flights), but that — like all the area’s peculiarities — ends up being a strength rather than a weakness.

One of two regions in Mexico with significant Black communities, the other is the state of Veracruz on the Gulf coast, a notable characteristic of the Costa Chica is its diverse populations, especially those of African descent. In the pre-Columbian era, the area was home to numerous Indigenous communities, primarily the Mixtec and Amuzgo, as well as smaller Tlapanec and Chitano communities.

Today, the Amuzgo primarily reside in Guerrero and the Mixtec in Oaxaca. Unlike Oaxaca City, this portion of our tour is more of an intimate setting and we will be traveling as a unit, exploring nature and communities, learning historical facts along with experiencing adventures and culinary delights.

This segment of the tour was carefully put together by a local community member, so you will be receiving 'insider' information about this magnificent area of the world.

Throughout the world there is an incredibly diverse and growing African Diaspora that influences art, culture, and cuisine. Wendy Johnson, CEO of As You Wish Travel Club, is personally interested in exploring these communities across the globe. She is an African American woman who studied cultural anthropology.

While researching the Afro Latino populations that exist in Mexico, where she lives, Wendy learned that Costa Chica is one of three "hidden communities" of African descent that still thrive to this day.

During the first time Wendy visited Costa Chica, she was delightfully surprised by the people's infectious joy for life and absolute contentment with what they had. The town is still developing its medical and educational infrastructure. Some areas did not have electricity until as late as 2020!

Regardless, Costa Chica and her people are vibrant with life and full of joy.
